In response to the devastating tragedy on New Year's Eve, where a driver intentionally drove into a crowd on Bourbon Street, claiming 15 lives and injuring many others, bEHR Health Systems Inc., a health technology company based at Xavier University of Louisiana, is refocusing its 2025 Big Game Steps Challenge to honor the victims, support their families, and contribute to long-term safety solutions for the community.
The Big Game Steps Challenge is a week-long fitness challenge taking place from January 20 to January 26, 2025, with the ambitious goal of collectively completing 59 million steps in one week. This target requires 1,000 participants each completing 59,000 steps during the challenge. Participants who reach the step goal will be entered into a drawing to win tickets to Super Bowl 59. The minimum entry fee for the challenge is $10, with 50% of all proceeds, up to $10,000, going directly to the victims’ families and community safety initiatives.
"Walking Together: Steps Toward Healing and Prevention"
"As a native of New Orleans, I love this city more than anything," said bEHR Health’s CEO. "We want to be unequivocally clear that we do not believe anyone is to blame for this tragedy other than the individual who committed this terrible crime. However, as a community, we can work together to prevent incidents like this in the future and support those who were impacted. Together, we can turn this pain into action and healing."
To that end, bEHR Health is committing proceeds from the Big Game Steps Challenge to assist the victims’ families and collaborating with city officials to propose and support a permanent safety solution that prioritizes prevention. This may include infrastructure enhancements, such as protective barriers or other measures designed to safeguard pedestrians and prevent similar tragedies.
Community Support Initiatives:
Financial Assistance: Half of the proceeds from the challenge, up to $10,000, will be donated to the victims’ families. Families will decide how the funds are used—whether for personal expenses, community projects, or other needs.
Collaborating on Safety Solutions: bEHR Health is committed to working with city officials and stakeholders to develop a permanent safety solution for Bourbon Street that prioritizes prevention, including infrastructure improvements such as protective barriers or other effective measures.
Advocacy for Prevention: In collaboration with local stakeholders, bEHR Health will support the development and implementation of safety solutions to protect the community.
The Big Game Steps Challenge is proudly sponsored by ViiV Healthcare, whose support amplifies the impact of this initiative.

Our goal is to collectively complete 59 million steps, symbolizing the power of unity and resilience in the face of tragedy,” said the CEO of bEHR Health. “This challenge is not just about fitness; it’s about healing, honoring those we’ve lost, and taking steps toward a safer future. With the support of ViiV Healthcare, we hope to make an even greater impact for the victims, their families, and the city of New Orleans.
